History

In 1968, Pastor Lee Barry and the late Cecil Lewelling, Sr. joined forces to start a youth football program.  When the idea began, Cecil stated that he could get the kids but did not have the funds for the equipment.  Mr. Barry said that “if you get the kids, I’ll get the equipment.”  Mr Lewelling went door-to-door recruiting youths to play on the first football team.  Mr. Barry kept his word and supplied all new uniforms and equipment to suit up 25 kids.  So, in 1969, the Taneytown Tigers took the field as the first youth football team in Taneytown.  In 1970, the cheerleaders were introduced and coached by the late Jeannette Lewelling.  Mrs. Lewelling made all of the cheerleading outfits for the first few years.  Now, over the years, the league has expanded and changed from the Taneytown Tigers to the FSK Jr. Eagles Football, Inc.

League

The FSK Jr. Eagles are a League Member of the Keystone Youth Football & Cheerleading League (KYFCL). http://www.kyflfootball.com

The KYFCL has teams from organizations from Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The goals of the League are as follows:

  • To promote and organize a Youth Football Program on a basis where good sportsmanship and fair play will be practiced at all times.
  • To consider the health, welfare, and ability of each individual participant.
  • To teach youngsters, through playing experience, the fundamentals of football
  • To keep the welfare of each participant first and foremost, and to instill fair play and good sportsmanship.

Philosophy

Our goal is to develop well-rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of football & cheer, but also the importance of education and teamwork in an atmosphere conductive to developing sound mind, body and character - all while enjoying their experience here.  We practice the ideals of sportsmanship, scholarship and physical fitness.  Our program stresses learning lessons of value far beyond the playing days, such as self-discipline, teamwork, concentration, friendship, leadership and good sportsmanship.

Our current board members wish to provide to you the best opportunity of learning and enjoyment for you and your children. We are always looking for fresh ideas to improve our program. We are looking forward to an exciting season.

Football Divisions

Smurfs

Competitive League (Ages 5 - 7) (Max. 80 lbs. to carry ball)
Smurf division is primarily for kids age 5-7 years old. In order to advance the football, ball handlers must under 80 lbs. Players over the 81 lb are considered “red stripers” and must play on the line. This division is the first level of contact football. Practices will be critical in developing sound fundamentals in blocking and tackling. Basic team concepts in offense and defense as well as learning specific positions will be an important part of the team experience. Game day is in the format of a controlled scrimmage against the Smurf team that our program plays on that particular day. Coaches are on the field during these scrimmages providing instruction to the players in the scrimmage setting in a similar fashion to what would take place in a practice. This division is a great opportunity for participants to develop into full contact football players.
